BUYING GUIDE / ARTWORK & SAMPLING

How should you prepare artwork and approve tin can samples?

Start with a confirmed can format and the supplier’s production template. Define which features the sample needs to demonstrate, then record the approved version before placing the production order.

Prepare an enquiry ↗

Before sending the design

  • Confirm the can format, dimensions and print areas.
  • Ask for the applicable artwork template and file requirements.
  • Provide editable artwork where available and identify fonts, logos and colour references.
  • Identify important text and graphics that must stay clear of edges, seams and closures.
  • Confirm the buyer-approved language and labeling text for the destination market.

Separate three types of review

ReviewQuestions to resolve
Digital layoutIs the text correct? Is the artwork positioned on the agreed template?
Physical appearanceWhich proof or sample is the reference for colour, print and finish?
Technical suitabilityAre dimensions, closure fit, materials and any application requirements separately confirmed?

Record exactly what is approved

Use clear identifiers for the artwork file, drawing and physical sample. Note whether approval covers appearance, fit, contents compatibility or another defined requirement. If materials or the production process change after sampling, ask whether the earlier approval still applies.

What to include in a sample request

State the purpose of the sample, required quantity, destination, target review date and the criteria used to accept it. Confirm sample costs, tooling needs and the expected timeline with the quotation. A website concept illustration or digital mockup is not a production approval.
